The Subconscious Link To Our Computer Desktop

If you are a Windows user then you probably have some kind of a desktop theme or wallpaper on your desktop. They are fun, and you can download some very cool ones from the Internet. I personally have a beautiful Celtic one that I downloaded, and I love it.

Recently, however, it came to my attention that our desktop themes and/or wallpaper can have a very subtle yet strong effect on us!

My husband went to Penn State University when he graduated from high school. He went in the early 70s, at the height of the hippie, sex-drugs-rock and roll era, when the Vietnam War was in full swing and protesting it was what college students did.
He was very much into the whole genre, and he got quite heavily into the drug and alcohol scene. He looked back on this time as fun and exciting, but also the beginnings of a long-term problem with substance abuse.

Recently he wanted to change his desktop, so he picked a fun Penn State theme. It had the fight song and the Nittany Lion, Penn States mascot.

After about a month of having this desktop theme on his computer he began having disturbing dreams. He dreamed repeatedly that he was back at Penn State. He had no money, had to sleep on park benches and he was constantly in search of drugs and a liquor store! He was quite confused by these dreams, and found them to be distressing.

When he finally discussed this with me, I heard right away that these dreams were being caused by the desktop theme. Even though he was looking back at the fun times when he viewed it, it was triggering memories in his subconscious that were not so fun. When we changed the theme of his desktop, the dreams stopped.

The subconscious is an interesting thing. It can take over and drive our cars for us when we are daydreaming while driving, but it has no ability to discern between fantasy and reality or between truth and lies. Our subconscious has no sense of good or bad, evil or angelic. It just IS. And when it is triggered by something, it can take over our dreams in ways that we do not understand.

So, what is your desktop theme saying to your subconscious? This is not unlike what that bumper sticker on your car is saying to strangers. You need to take a look at this and evaluate what your theme is saying to you and about you.

Try to pick a desktop theme that shows something soothing, or some goal that you have. Make it be uplifting! Consider it as a tool that can work for you or against you. It is a lot easier to have a theme that is going to trigger only the highest and best in your subconscious, than it is to deal with bad dreams or why your thinking may be negative.

Little things can mean a lot!

Sales of HDTVs are more than doubling each year, technology advances are announced daily, and it's hard to keep up with this heady pace. But it all sounds strangely familiar. Take a moment to consider the personal computer market of 15 years ago. Back in 1991...

* The computer you really wanted cost $3,000 or more;

* System specifications were a confusing mess of acronyms and jargon, such as EGA and VGA, MHz and KB, IDE and DRAM, cache and interleave;

Eyestrain is another ergonomic problem frequently associated with the use of computers and Video Display Terminals (VDTs). Keep in mind that the solutions presented here are only recommendations. If following these recommendations seems to make matters worse, try something else! If you aren't experiencing headaches or eyestrain while you work at the computer, don't worry about making changes; obviously your setup works for you.

When people concentrate, they blink less often. Sometimes they concentrate so hard that they blink only once per minute, instead of the normal once every five seconds. This, too, will cause the eyes to dry out and become irritated. The Solution? Take micro-breaks! Frequently look up from your monitor and focus on an object several feet away. Make a conscious effort to blink. (see Eye Exercise)

Computer screen glare, inadequate room lighting and poor ergonomics are all known to contribute to eyestrain. The convergence of our eyes however is the main factor why we have computer-induced eyestrain. Every once in a while, change focus by glancing across the room or look out the window and focus on objects at least 20 feet away. Then, lightly cup your eyes with your palms, and relax for 60 seconds. Or, look away from the screen, and roll your eyes up and down, around and side to side. Eye Exams If you experience chronic eye problems, have your eyes examined by an eye care professional. If you work on a VDT, be sure to tell the doctor. Anyone who works regularly on VDTs should have annual eye exams, and people over age 40 may need more frequent checkups.

Invest in a special prismatic lens to reduce convergence demand on the eyes while we look at a near object such as a computer. The lenses are tinted to cut down glare and UV radiation, and they are non-magnifying. Most importantly, the prism feature of the lens will gently re-position our eyes to a more natural and comfortable position, relieving demand on eye muscles. This indirectly relaxes the focusing effort, providing a reduction in tension and enhancement of clearer vision.

Right Monitor Size for your Computer

There are many sizes of monitors today. Choosing the right size depends on several things. For our eyes to work their best they must be comfortable for as long as we are looking at the monitor. Keeping in mind the height of our desk top and chair when buy a monitor.

In general the appropriate size will allow you to sit about 30" back from the screen with your eye level above the top of the monitor with a 30-degree downward gaze angle. Monitors that are bigger than you need, will usually sit too high on a desk. This forces our eyes to look up at them causing additional near viewing stress. Too small of a screen will force us closer to the monitor also adding to near viewing stress. A 15" or 17" monitor is usually the best size for most of us.

Monitor size is measured by the distance from one corner of the screen's viewable area to the diagonally opposite corner. With CRTs, the number is generally about an inch greater than the actual area. The real number is included in the specs. For example, you might see a 17" monitor state 16.1" viewable. With flat panel monitors, the screen size specification is actually its real size.

What matters is monitor resolution, not monitor size. In the Computer World, the screens usually take the size of 14", 15", 17", and 19" . There are 3 main screen resolutions: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 pixels. Usually 14-15" computers take on a 800x600 resolution, and larger screens use higher resolution, but this is NOT always the case. Some old 14" monitor can display up to 1024x768 pixels.

The monitor resolution or number of pixels in the viewing window affects the way it appears. Images and text have their dimensions ultimately specified in terms of pixels regardless of what?s being used to view them. The greater the number of pixels, the finer the resolution. An image on a monitor with a resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels will generally look better and be sharper than an image on a monitor with a resolution of 800 by 600 pixels or 640 x 480 pixels.

Resolution refers to the number of individual dots of color, known as pixels, contained on a display. Resolution is expressed by identifying the number of pixels on the horizontal axis (rows) and the number on the vertical axis (columns), such as 800x600. Resolution is affected by a number of factors, including the size of the screen.

Computer role playing known as Role playing game or (RPG), has become one of the most popular forms of computer games on the market today. RPGs not only use point and click methods, but include traits such as character selection, multi-players, first or third person shooters and strategy. The characters range from regular human beings to mythical creatures such as monsters. The settings are usually based medieval periods or other historical and mythical times and the storylines are dark and build up slower.

Normally we think of maintenance as a chore, something we have to do to keep things running smoothly and prevent problems down the road, whether with our car, house, or computer. But with a PC, maintenance can actually be fun ... approached from the right perspective.

Automatic Updates

The "joy" of computer maintenacne takes many forms. These days, automation is the byword. Operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Symantec's Norton Interenet Security let you automatically keep crucial parts of your computer system up to date. It's fun to watch the technology keep tabs on itself.

The security vulnerablilites of Windows are legion, and this forces you to download patches and updates if you want to minimuze your exposure to hackers seeking to break into your system over the Internet.

You can run Windows Update periodically through Microsoft Internet Explorer, which automatically detects which versions of Windows components you currently have installed and, by checking with Microsoft's site, which have newer versions.

Or, if you are running Windows XP Home Edition, you can automate things even further by directing Windows to check for "critical updates" by itself at the frequency and time of your choosing. From the Control Panel, go to System and click Automatic Updates to specify your settings.

Website Updates

You can keep your other software up to date by periodically checking the Websites of the respective manufacturers. Typically, by pulling down the program's Help menu, you will quickly be directed to the site. But the Website VersionTracker (techtracker.com/products) does something similar with multiple programs, for free, whether you have a Windows PC or a Mac. The ad-supported site has 30,000 programs in its database. Pay versions, starting at $24.95, automatically alert you when new updates of programs that you're using become available.

Using Utilities

Staying up to date is crucially important these days in keeping the bad guys away from your computer and those using it. A good utility suite for this is Norton Internet Security (symantec.com), which combines such crucial tools as a firewall, anti-virus program, porn-blocker, spam filter, spyware detector, and pop-up ad blocker. If you use the program, make sure you let its LiveUpdate feature automatically keep your virus definitions and other components up to date.

Symantec's other utility suite, Norton SystemWorks, is less useful, and if you need system tools more powerful than those provided by Windows itself, a better package overall is V Communications' SystemSuite (v-com.com).

SystemSuite includes tools for preventing and recovering from hard disk crashes, recovering accidentally erased files, completely uninstalling programs you no longer need, and completely shredding sesitive files. It also has an excellent file manager, PowerDesk, that makes quicker work of copying, moving, deleting, and otherwise manipulating files than Windows Explorer.

With today's large and fast hard drives and more efficient operating systems, one maintenance task that's no longer as necessary is disk defragmenting. When working with files over time, they invariably wind up stored in places at different locations on your hard disk. Running a defragmenter gathers up the pieces and places them together in one contiguous location.

Recent testing by the computer magazine PC World, however, showed that defragging no longer improves performance the way it used to. It still makes sense to defrag once in a while, though unless it's for a network file server, there's usually no need to buy a separate program for this beyond what comes with Windows itself.

So in all ... even automated maintenance can be fun in that it is automated and can leave you more time for other endevours.

Computers can catch virus, just like we do. When the computer gets sick, it needs anti virus software as a medicine. When it is strong and fit, it needs antivirus software as an added defense against any virus attack.

When the computer catches a virus, it can have one or more of the following syndromes.

Example of these software are: Windows Updater, Anti Virus software (It is important to keep you anti virus software up-to-date.), Backup program etc.

- Too many programs are running in the computer at the same time.

Nevertheless, it is still very important to have an anti virus software loaded, updated and running in your computer.
However, no antivirus software can help you to remove or clean up all viruses completely. Therefore, it is important to prevent virus from attacking your computer. So an anti virus software should be the first software program to be loaded and running in your computer. You have to update the anti virus software right after you have successfully loaded into your computer.

It is very very important to update your anti virus software regularly. New viruses are discovered frequently, not updating your anti virus software will make these new virus to attack your computer easily.

If Money Were No Object - My Computer

If I had a few thousand dollars to spend on a new computer, what would I get? Obviously, I'd build a monster so powerful that the inside would get hot enough to cook my dinner if it lacked proper cooling.

What to get look for in a powerful computer:

Processor ? I would get a multi-core fast processor. Today, Intel processors outperform AMD, so most likely I would go for them. In development for the future, are nano-sized cores that would allow for, I?m guessing, a few hundred core processors. There are already 80 core processors in testing, not in production. If they are ever available, I think I would get one of those.

Motherboard ? It must support SLI and lots of RAM. Support for DDR2 800 and two or more PCI x express slots.

RAM ? I would get atleast 4GB of the fastest speed. If possible, I would get 8GB (4 x 2GB) each are required to have heatspreaders.

Video Card ? The newest, biggest card available. These cards generally have huge heatsinks and take up two expansion slots. Running multiple cards in SLI mode will make your graphics unbelievable.

Case ? A large case with great airflow is a must. If this computer will be generating lots of heat, cooling is a must.

Water Cooling ? A fan and heatsink will not be enough for this one. I would have to overclock this system and that means a liquid cooling system is needed. I would go for the biggest diameter tubing and a block for the processor and each video card.

Hard Drive ? A fast RPM drive for faster reading. SATA 3.0GB transfer rate is essential so data can be transferred quickly.

Power Supply ? Due to the enormous energy consumption, a hefty power source is needed. I would start with 1000 watts and it would need multiple PCIxE connectors for my video cards.

Monitors ? Without good monitors, what would I need this computer for? Two 30 inch widescreen LCD panels should be good enough. Dual monitor to multitask easier.

I Hate Computers

I hate computers, especially when I'm trying to call a company for information or assistance, and have to fight my way through a seemingly unending maze of instructions from an automated robot. "For this press one; for that press two", and so on. Some companies take you several layers deep in options before you get the choice of speaking with a live human being. I understand the efficiency involved, but at what cost? Usually it is at the expense of doing business with me.

Auto-responders are also great tools, and there are a number of ways to use them to your advantage. If they're set up to provide information about specific things, they can be a great time saver. But when they are used improperly, they can do more harm than good. If I request information and receive an auto-response, fine. But don't send me the same information once a week for the next seven weeks. All you are succeeding in doing is aggravating an otherwise potential customer.

While I'm pretty tolerant about receiving unsolicited email, (spam) I do find it annoying to get the same ad over and over, all sent to a different address at my domain, day after day. It is pretty obvious that the sender has software to search the web looking for email addresses, and harvesting every one they could find. If you try to respond to their message, it is returned as undeliverable, and in my judgement is not an offer from a legitimate company - another customer lost.

Ever try to get a question answered at Microsoft's web site? They ask you to describe your problem, and then give you an automated answer, which may or may not solve your problem. Efficient - yes, helpful - possibly. Don't get caught up in this trap. Sometimes there is no substitute for interaction with other people.

Yes, the Internet is a vast, impersonal place. But if you are hoping to do business on the web, you have to inject the personal touch. Personalized email can be a great tool in your bag of tricks. If you get a question, take a few moments and try to answer it - if you do, you will most likely gain a long term supporter, and if they're a prospect, a customer.

Another thing that many are remiss at, is thanking someone who buys their product, or becomes a customer. Now if your business produces a lot of orders, it may not be possible to send a personalized thank you note to every customer. But you can have a "canned" letter hid away in your word processor that you can copy and paste. A little attention here goes a long way.

Many times you will receive comments or suggestions. Some may be positive and others could be negative. You should take the time to personally respond to these. Thank people for positive comments. If it is negative try to address the issue, but don't get defensive. If someone has a gripe, and takes the time to write you, take them seriously. Maybe they are simply chronic complainers, but maybe their opinion has substance. Evaluate every comment you get, and surprisingly, you just might find a flaw in your approach that you never thought of, but someone else did.

Tread carefully when someone requests a joint venture. Many times these are thinly veiled pyramids. If you sell advertising in your publication or on your website, why would someone be willing to give you a healthy percentage of their profit, in return for your running an ad for them. Personally, I get offers like this all the time, addressed to "Dear Webmaster" and you know where they wind up. Once in awhile however, someone will have a legitimate offer, and be willing to trade off a percentage of their profit for your advertising efforts. But if you do this, remember that you are putting your reputation on the line as well. Affiliate programs do this all the time.

Well, I really don't hate computers, but I think you get the drift. Even in the cold world of the Internet, if you expect to do business, you must use a personal approach. Most people have the same reaction to some of the automated procedures in use that I do, and really appreciate the contact with a live human being. If you do offer this type of personal service, you will have a real advantage over your competitors, who believe that you can simply automate the process, and watch the money flow in.

The world today is rather different than it was 20 years ago. While so many things used to run on manual labor, computers have certainly changed the way we do things. You'll quickly notice how many of your University peers are receiving in-depth computer based training for their future career. Computers are a huge business. It's easy to say that they're used in everything. You want to be an engineer; get some computer based training. Are you an English major? You'll need computers for your writing no matter what type of scribe you are. You can achieve computer based training at community colleges that will prepare you for a good career. My brother has been a computer technician for 12 years and he is doing very well with a two-year degree.

You can easily hop online and check out the various types of computer based training available at every school. Whether you're computer savvy or not, it is prudent to learn and understand this modern form of work and play. The chances are you will need some computer based training for some aspect of your work or studies. The Internet is a very simple concept to adapt to. Cyberspace is where you will find oodles of free information concerning computers, software, and any other things you wish. If you have no prior computer based training, but wish to better understand these modern innovations, hop online where ever you have access and get a richer understanding of computers today. With computer based training you can certainly expand your options when it comes to careers. Most employers these days request some knowledge of software and PCs.
