Education Online and Computer eLearning Tools for Special Kids
Special Kids require more teachers and assistants per students to assist them in learning. This is a challenge for school budgets as even the regular classes are often bursting at the seams with regards to student/teacher ratios. Tough choices thus, are sometimes made by administrators as the parents of regular kids and of special kids battle it out at PTA Meetings.
"Hey wait a minute; can we have some order here? We are all on the same team! This is about the kids not us." - Superintendent of Public Instruction in a town near you
Why can't we rely more on eLearning, computer tools, virtual reality and online education to assist in crossing the challenges of the teacher/student ratios and maxed out school budgets? My question to educators is what are your thoughts on Self-Esteem and eLearning in special cases?
My thoughts I think are much about the use of Virtual Reality, Avatars -congratulating kids. Do you remember that cool little device "toy" called; Speak and Spell? It congratulated the students when they go the answer right; "you are correct!" and what does the kid do? He or she has a big smile and makes a gesture. Even looks around to see if anyone noticed! Right, sure they do.
Now then if no one is there the student things; who cares, but if a Virtual Reality Avatar says, "you are doing really good and getting a lot better" then someone is there and that becomes not only a bonding with the computer, which will be necessary for "trust" and future mutual reliance, but it also builds self esteem.
It seems we need to cross more than the digital divide in eLearning, we need to cross the self-esteem and self-confidence divide you see? I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

Will the Real Computer Genius Please Stand Up
Remember your first meeting with a "not so friendly" computer device called a mouse or pointing device? Frightening thought and almost cold shivers but maybe more excitement, the mere thought of actually controlling this super genius inhuman, by the flick of a wrist and a click of a button. Back in the old days even before sliced bread, I recall a neighbour inviting us over to view his new toy - that was my first meeting with a personal computer (not so personal my friend thought after a few days - we visited every day for hours).
Needless to say after a month, we were invited or happened to drop by to view the latest addition to this awesome device - a 10 Mega Byte hard disk drive. We were overwhelmed by the thought of storing all our saved games and software on this storage device and still be able to add a year's worth of data without reproducing the dreadful "disk full error". Friend Louis was the coolest kid on the block. We were geniuses, on top of the world, ms-dos experts, untouchable until one day.
We thought we were clever when we figured out how to rename files! We just couldn't get enough of this handy command, then it happened we renamed the actual system files to any name we could think of. Chuffed with our accomplishments we decided to proceed with our journey to take over the world the following day. Shocked was the least to mention the out bursting of emotion, our little super brain was complaining but just wouldn't boot. We eventually confessed to our superiors - (mom and dad) and the true expert were called in the following day to repair the damage. Until today if I rename any file the old memories comes back.
Today I'm glad that I was part of that learning journey. The true expert (our small town local computer technician) impressed me the most although he only reloaded the operating system, he acted and looked like a genius. That day my career took off by helping people becoming computer geniuses or at least in their own environment. I realised that there is always someone with more experience, but we'll catch up. The excitement knowing that today I learned something new, even though I would like to think of myself as technologically advanced, is the true fulfillment.
Becoming a computer genius is possible but remember their will always be someone a step ahead developing another great product or invention and then we start the learning curve all over again. Happy computing and believe in your abilities - you will learn a new cool trick of the trade today and if not read till you do.
Every now and again the need arises to perform some maintenance tasks to ensure the optimal running of your computer. Of course you can use the scheduler to schedule tasks to run when your computer is unattended. The following utilities ensure that your computer stays in top shape.
Defragmentation
Spyware Removal software
Antivirus full scan
Disk Cleanup
Removal of unused software
Clear history of internet pages visited
Full service to be performed by a qualified technician. The major cause of computer or printer failure are dust.

How to Talk to Your Computer
There are times when you and your computer need to sit down and have a face-to-face chat in order to make sure your relationship doesn?t crash and burn. Even if he* finds it difficult to open up his emotional files, your relationship is too important to let yourselves go through life more roommates than partners.
Some people schedule regular conversations with their computers. Others wait until they see signs of things going awry; signs such as:
? Being greeted every day by a blank stare;
? Finding it increasingly difficult to turn him on, despite trying things that used to work like clockwork;
? His picking on little things, sending you messages such as ?You been idle for 35 minutes? or ?It?s time to upgrade.?
You must resist the temptation to reboot and start over. You made a commitment. You read the manual. Starting over may look like the easier choice, but that?s only because we humans tend to forget how much work it was to get a relationship started in the first place. Perhaps this is because our memory is insufficient.
Too many people give up on their computer relationships while the hard drive is still warm. They operate out of frustration and anger, failing to even consider what will happen to the software if a long custody battle ensues. (Believe me, if your connection with your computer has deteriorated, your software knows.)
If you?re almost at the breaking point, but willing to work things out, here are some tips to help reformat your relationship:
? Choose a time to talk when neither of you is distracted. If you try to bring up your problems while his attention is on fantasy football, you?re just dooming yourself to failure, even without an electrical storm brewing.
? Keep in mind that studies show that humans and computers tend to communicate somewhat differently. More often than not, your computer is the strong, silent type, keeping his feelings inside until they bubble over ? and then the spam hits the fan. Humans tend to express their emotions more readily, often in language a computer can?t hear, much less understand. ?You freakin? piece of overpriced garbage!? may express your true feelings in the moment, but don?t expect the machine in front of you to respond with anything but a sulk.
? Try to be as empathetic as possible. Sure it may seem that your computer does nothing but sit around all day goofing off and visiting questionable websites while you?re out working and running errands, but chances are that?s not how he sees it at all. The more you keep in mind the fact that everyone wants to feel needed, the more likely you?ll be to get your wired half to take your needs into consideration.
? Take time out to have fun together. If your relationship is all about online banking and arguing about his motherboard, it?s no wonder the two of you have grown apart. Upload your partner onto a flashdrive and take a walk in the park. Toss a virtual Frisbee or just plug and play.
? Never forget that the you two are a team. There may be times you both feel like pulling the plug, but your interconnectivity is strong ? don?t let it be interrupted by lack of effort on your part or faulty routing.
No one said that getting along with your computer in the long run was going to be easy, but remember those vows you took at the beginning: ??Til death or hard drive failure do us part.?
