The Best cheap computers Articles on Wine
Basic Computer Maintenance

We get asked all the time what things you can do to prolong the life of your system and keep it running in top shape. We have put together a short list of our favorite tips to help you maximize that investment of yours. Use these tips to keep your system cool, running fast, and lasting longer.

I Thought I Saw A Bunny Wabbit

The main enemy of your computer is heat. Heat will destroy a computer given a high enough temperature or a long enough duration. When you machine is nice and new, heat shouldn't be a problem is a well designed system. Well, if it isn't a problem when you bought it, why is it a problem now? The answer are two simple words: dust bunnies

Those pesky dust bunnies will multiply in the sanctity of your computer case like real rabbts in the wild. The dust will build up on the components and cooling fins trapping in heat. Now I know that now self respecting computer stud wants to ask the wife to borrow the dust buster, heaven knows you might get trapped into cleaning something else while you are at it. In our book, the best cleaning is to take the machine outside, remove the side panel, and use a good air compressor or canned air to clean off all of the components. Be sure and use the little straw to get deep into the power supply. More power supplies are lost every year to dust buildup than any other cause. Before putting the cover back on, check all the cards and RAM to make sure it is seated well.

Do The Defrag

When do you defragment your drive? This is an age old question that I will put to rest right here and now. You do NOT need to defragment your drive every day, nor every week, and many people don't need to even do it once a month. It really just depends on how much your use your system. We reecommend a defragmentation about once a month. In an upcoming article, we will actually show you how to automate this process.

Backup

Enough said. If you are not backing up your data on a regular basis, then paint your face, put on a funny wig and a rubber nose and hang out with Bozo, cause a fool you are. Read this sentance carefully: your hardrive will die someday...period. It is only a matter of when. how often should you back up? That depends again, how far back to you want to go when your hard drive dies and all of your data is gone? Every business should be backing up their data monday through friday, preferably with the ability to go back to any day's backup for at least two weeks.

Whose got the power?

One of the most overlooked problems that will reduce a perfectly good computer to a pile of rubble in no time flat is the quality of the power coming into the system. If the power fluctuates up and down even a small amount, it puts a tremendous strain on the power supply to filter it and deliver clean power to the system components. At minimum you want a good surge suppressor. I am not talking about the $2.99 hardware store specials, I am talking about a good quality, brand name (like Belkin) surge suppresor. If you spend less than $20 on it, it is not providing adequate protection. If you really want ensure good quality power to your system, invest in even a small battery backup system. A small UPS will smooth out the power spikes and drops end deliver smooth, consistent power to your system.

Twelve Key Questions You Need to Ask About Your Computer Security for Your Home or Business

Security technology is only a part of an overall security plan. If you own a small business or a home-based business, or if you've been tasked with implementing security at your organization, developing a comprehensive security plan should be a very important part of your overall security strategy. Get the information you need to get started on the right track! In the computer/internet security game, the best move is one of Prevention! Prevention! Prevention!

With that in mind, here are the twelve questions you need to be asking, or, at least, be thinking about if you're serious about preventing or stopping security risks, threats, and attacks:

1. Do I have a solid security policy or strategy?

If you don't, begin immediately to get sample security plans, policies, and best practices for your business and/or home.

2. Where would I go for key information and news on keeping your information private?
Search the internet for managed security services. Ask if they provide a free computer test to assess your pc's level of vulnerability. Ask if they provide the latest tips to keep your privacy and protect your personal information and that of your business. Or simply - ask me.

3. Does my disaster recovery plan include redundant back-up and data recovery systems?
Understand what a good data back up system is and how to best recover from a disaster.

4. Do I know how to create safe passwords?

Learn how to write virtually un-crackable passwords.

5. How do I train my employees or family members to be secure?

Get all leading research on what to teach about security.

6. What do I do if my employees are my biggest security risk?

Learn all about social engineering and insider hacking.

7. What or who is a hacker?

A person who uses and/or creates software technology to break into the computers of individuals, businesses, government, and organizations for personal gain is known as a hacker. Often after he, she, or they hack into a computer, they can control it secretly by remote, making it a "zombie computer".

8. How does he (or she or they) break into home and business computers?

If they don't have the break-in software, they can buy it off the black market, or create it, themselves. With this technology, they use their malicious software to look for holes in the computers of their targeted victims.

9. To what extent might my home or business computers be vulnerable to hackers, hacker's tools, viruses, etc.?

You will never know unless you take the time to test your computer to see what holes are open, by what back doors (up to 65,000 portals) are malware entering your computer.

10. What is "drive-by hacking"?

Because wireless Internet access points have become popular for homes and businesses, home and business computers have now become a major target for hackers. In this new phenomenon, called "dive-by hacking", hackers simply take their laptop computers in their cars and drive through business parks or residential neighborhoods remotely scanning for open wireless networks.

11. Would I know if someone tries to hack into my computer?

Depending on the security measures you have on your computer and the sophistication of the hacker's software program, you might or might not be aware. Using keylogging programs, these cybercriminals can secretly see and record every keystroke you enter on your computer, thereby gaining access to all your private and personal information.

12. I have all the security measures, anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall I need. Can I still be hit by hackers and other pc-disabling attacks, risks, and threats?

Again, depending on the security measures you have on your computer and the sophistication of the hacker's software program, your computer or computers might or might not be compromised. Remember: Cybercriminals are superintelligent criminals! They somehow always seem to stay one step ahead of authorities and anti-cybercriminal software.

Obviously if you have to ask these questions, then you need to take immediate steps to plug the holes and cover the gaps.

So, here are some steps you can take immediately to implement, increase, or improve your present security measures:

* Learn all you can about hackers and the tools and methods they use to invade your privacy and cause problems. Subscribe to a comprehensive source of Internet security research, news and information for small and mid-sized businesses and organizations, or other professionals, that want to increase their level of security and build on their current technologies and efforts.

* Take advantage of the research already done. Get access to information about the leading topics in the security field, including hackers and hacker tools, viruses, data back up, writing good passwords, government and legal issues, protecting from insider hacking - and more.

* Stay current with important security news developments. Work with a managed security firm that maintains an entire library of the most beneficial news articles, white papers and other links that you can use to maintain an excellent awareness of cyber-security issues on an ongoing basis.

* Need help creating a security plan for your organization or business? Take advantage of professional security consulting and training both by telephone consulting or on-site visits. Get vulnerability assessments, employees training, security implementation, and much more.

Because cyberpredators and other cybercriminals are becoming smarter and more sophisticated in their operations, they are real threats to your personal security and privacy. Your money, your computer, your family, and your business are all at risk.

These cybercriminals leave you with three choices :

1. Do nothing and hope their attacks, risks, and threats don?t occur on your computer.

2. Do research and get training to protect yourself, your family, and your business.

3. Get professional help to lockdown your system from all their attacks, risks, and threats.

Remember: When you say "No!" to hackers and spyware, everyone wins! When you don't, we all lose!

The key to the performance of the DataFire SYNC/570i is its Direct Memory Access (DMA)-to-shared memory architecture. Its on-board 256K memory is directly addressable by both the system and the DMA of the SCA. Program-initiated DMA transfers operate at DMA/memory speed independently of other system activity. This results in reduced system overhead and aggregated hardware line speeds of up to 5 Mbps.

Build Your Own Computer or Buy?

Just look inside a computer case. At first glance, all those wires and components can look terrifyingly complex. And thinking about putting them all together by yourself may seem impossible.

Not to worry! Even though they are the products of advanced technology, the various pieces of a personal computer (PC) fit together with simple connections. If you can use a screwdriver and follow simple instructions, you can build your own PC.

Don't be intimidated by the task of connecting the computer components together. Many of the internal connections are molded so that it is impossible to fit them together the wrong way. If you have ever assembled a child's toy, you are more than capable of assembling a computer.

Advantages Of Building Your Own

You are probably asking yourself why anyone would bother to build a PC. After all, you can buy a cheap computer in almost any retail store.

If cost is your only consideration, you probably are better off buying one of those cheap machines. But if you have any special requirements for software or hardware, youll benefit from the total control over the type and quality of components you get from building your own PC.

You can save some money, too. Although you probably can't match the price of the cheapest preassembled PC, once you begin adding on the inevitable customized hardware, the costs go up anyway. Suddenly building your own computer starts looking cheaper. And don't forget--those super-cheap PCs are bare-boned systems. Unless you need a computer only for basic word processing and e-mail, you will probably have to upgrade anyway.

Building your own PC can be a great learning experience. You will gain a better understanding of how the various components work together, knowledge that can be useful for troubleshooting. If your computer ever breaks down, you may be able to pinpoint the problem and fix it yourself, saving money on expensive repair bills.

You are virtually guaranteed to get the best computer when you build your own system. Big retailers often use cheaper OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) components to cut down on costs. Components like these can compromise the performance of a computer system. Although you can buy OEM components yourself, the trade-off in reliability and stability is usually not worth it. Brand name components are just a bit more expensive, but are well worth the cost.

Disadvantages

The major disadvantage in building your own PC is that you don't get a system-wide warranty. For example, if a malfunctioning motherboard fries your memory chips, you may not be able to get compensation for the damaged memory. If something like this happens with a store-bought system you could probably get the whole computer repaired under the warranty.

However, if you buy all your components at the same time from the same retailer, you are more likely to be compensated for this kind of situation.

Time is, of course, a factor. But it is educational time. And if you enjoy tinkering at all, it counts as fun time as well.

The Bottom Line

Building your own PC has a lot to offer. You'll be assured of getting the best components available, which translates to the best and most reliable computer for your money. You will learn about computer components and how to choose parts with the best performance. When it comes to servicing your computer, you may be able to solve and fix the problem yourself.

Oh, and one final advantage. The bragging rights of telling your friends that you built your own computer. Priceless!

The Advantages of Building or Buying Your Dream Custom Built Computer . . .

The Advantages of Building or Buying Your Dream Custom Built Computer . . .

A Custom Built Computer is cheaper, and on average more reliable than a brand name computer. One reason for this is the a brand name computer companies buy there parts in Bulk because they get a better cost from the manufacturer, this in turn throws the old saying quality before quantity right out the windows. Another big advantage of buying a custom built computer is that you get exactly what you pay for. You get to pick exactly what parts are going into the computer case, Hell you even get to choose the computer case. With a little bit of research on the internet or even visits to your local computer shops you can read articles and ask questions and then know which parts play nicely together, example, excuse me but how well will this NVidia Video Card work on this Asus SLI mainboard? Knowing the answers to questions like this will make sure you get the custom built computer your looking for..

Things to keep in mind when building a Custom Computer. . .

Lets touch on quickly what I consider the 4(four) most important choices you have to make when building your custom computer:

1) Computer Tower - The computer case is not really an accessory -- it is an integral part of the computer--think UPGRADES! Be sure the tower is capable of mounting various kinds of Mainboards such as Intel ATX, Micro ATX, Intel BTX ,Micro BTX and Pico BTX.

2)Power Supply - As computers have progressed so have their need of more power to run them. Most Mainboard and CPU manufacturers like Intel, AMD and Asus have a list of recommended power supplies. NOTE - Some Warrantys on Mainboards and CPU's can be voided if the power supply does not meet or excede the CPU's or Mainboard's manufacturers min requirements.

3) The Mainboard - Again crucial is the ability for the Mainboard to be UPGRADABLE! This includes everything from CPU size, Slots for RAM(Random Access Memory) Video Slot, is it AGP or the Newer PCI-Express, hard drives, SATA, SATA2, IDE, SCSI, find out its worth your time.

4) CPU - The very heart of your custom built computer, why is it not #1 on this list, because without all those other parts all you will have is an expensive paperweight. There are 2 major manufacturers duking it out for your CPU bucks, Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices). Both offer a high end CPU, in the price battle AMD usually comes in under the Intel. That choice I will leave to you and your needs.

In closing Getting a custom built computer is a great way to go, I hope this helps you find out if a custom built computer is right for you.

Spokane, WA April 27, 2006 - Tometa Software is set to release its version of an "internet history washer" with TrackSweeper.net, a software application which will delete temporary internet files and computer activity logs ensuring personal information and computer activity remains private.

Are You Being Lied to About Computer Phones (VoIP)?
By Dee Scrip All rights reserved.

The majority of computer phone programs, such as those operating on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks, are unsafe and provide a conduit for hackers to enter your network or computer, access personal and confidential information, as well as deploy viruses or worms.

Clients of P2P computer phone systems are prime targets and/or launching points for malicious hack attacks for two simple reasons:

1. They provide a harbor for hackers when clients download the services file-sharing programs or electronic files
2. They provide a harbor for hackers because the service operates on publicly open and interpretable industry standard protocols and industry standard codec.

A Staff Report submitted by the Government Reform Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives (May 2003), entitled File-Sharing Programs and Peer-to-Peer Networks Privacy and Security Risks, stated that users of these programs have inadvertently made their personal information available to other users. A search of one P2P network found at least 2,500 Microsoft Money backup files, which stores the users personal financial records, available for download.

Personal information that can be hack attacked include, among others:
1. Tax returns containing you name, address, and social security numbers of not only you, but your spouse and dependents,
2. Financial information such as income and investments,
3. Medical records,
4. Business files such as contracts and personnel evaluations,
5. Attorney-client communications

Spyware/Adware programs are frequently bundled into P2P file-sharing software.

Spyware/Adware programs collect personal information for marketers and provide access to your computer by malicious hackers. In an article located on Vnunet.com entitled Users Fume at Grokster Drive-by Download, these two programs are able to

redirect a users homepage to a different website,
install a new browser toolbar,
insert entries into the users browser bookmark list,
reinstall itself after uninstallation,
and ultimately crash a clients system.

Sinister Supernodes

Another grave concern for both individuals and businesses is inadvertently authorizing your computer to be used as a supernode just by downloading a services P2P software. A supernode occurs when your computer is arbitrarily assigned as a hub.

By using the software for P2P services, your computers disk space, bandwidth, and processing power are enlisted to help other customers on the same system operate their software more efficiently because of their own network or firewall constraints. This can be applicable even when your computer is turned off.

Not only can this invasion overload systems or networks with excessive data, disk space, and network bandwidth, unscrupulous hackers can also insert arbitrary code in each supernodes address space, or even crash all supernodes.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems such as Skype, operate by taking bandwidth (information carrying capacity) from customers on their service to assist other customers using their service - analogous to a symbiotic relationship. The tools and authorization to perform these activities are bundled in the software their customers download to access their VoIP service.

Learn Computer Programming - You Can Do It!

Almost anyone can learn to program. There are only a few requirements (like having access to a computer), and you don't have to be a genius. (Well? it helps if you are a genius, I suppose, but you don't HAVE to be one).

This article addresses some of the motivations you might have for wanting to learn to program computers, looks at some things to consider, and discusses a few different ways to start learning now!

What is it you want to do?

There are a lot of reasons for wanting to learn computer programming, and what you want to do with it can help guide you in choosing your path in learning. Perhaps you are interested in programming as a career. In that case you will want to make sure you are learning things that will make you attractive to those who hire programmers. On the other hand, you might just be looking for a fascinating hobby, and in that case you can let be a bit more casual about what you learn and focus only on things that interest you.

Maybe you need to automate various applications you use at work. For example, perhaps you want to automate a word processor to do mailing labels or a spreadsheet to do customized financial forecasting, or maybe you want to write computer games, or have a cool web site, or... the reasons are endless, just as the things you can do with a computer are.

The languages you learn will be influenced by these things, as well as the approach you will want to take as you begin to learn to do computer programming.

What resources do you have available?

Time, money, people who can help guide you, computers, books, programming clubs, classes, programming forums... these are all resources that will be handy as you are learning to program.

If you have a lot of time and money, a computer, and access to learning opportunities like college classes and developer group meetings, you will probably be able to learn at a rapid pace. If you can only spend an hour or so each day, and you don't have your own computer, and you can only buy one or two books, you will have to adjust your expectations a bit. However, either way, or somewhere in-between, you will be able to learn to program.

What is the level of your motivation?

This is a very important consideration. This isn't going to be easy. You are going to need to keep going even when things seem impossible and you can't find the answers you need. It takes a fair amount of brain power, will power, and the ability to work things out. You will be well served if you can muster a "stick-it-out" kind of attitude.

One of the attractions of computer programming is that there is a lot of problem solving, and you will have to solve a lot of them both while you are learning as well as when you are using your skills to do useful things. It takes a lot of interest and dedication to stick with it long enough to get somewhere - if this still sounds good to you, you will probably do okay.

So, how to get started?

There are a lot of ways to go about getting started. You can get started today, regardless of how you are going to approach this over the long run. Here are a few tips on getting started quickly:

* Learn in baby steps - Start with something very easy, and add to it. There is no advantage to jumping in with both feet unless you have unlimited time and resources.

* The quickest way to start might be to use a language that comes with software you already have. For example, you can do a great deal of programming in Microsoft Word using Visual Basic for Applications. There are numerous commercial software applications that include a way to enhance them using programming or scripting languages.

* Here is another idea for getting started quickly: There are simple languages available with almost every operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac) for automating your repetitive tasks. For example, in Windows you can use VBScript. Again - a simple internet search will get you lots of information.

* Pick a more full featured language that is available free - To get started with the least expense and as quickly as possible, one approach is to download a programming environment for free on the internet. For example, you can download the Ruby language and everything you need to work with it for free. Another example is the Microsoft .NET Express languages (VB.NET or C# are good choices) - again, you can download everything you need for free from Microsoft. A little internet search on either "Ruby Language" or "Microsoft .NET Express" will get you all the info you need.

* Use the internet - You already know this or you wouldn't be reading this article, but the internet is full of resources to help you learn to program. That makes sense, since the internet has been created and programmed by programmers. A lot of programmers are willing to share their knowledge through free tutorials, forums, tips sites, and articles. You will find links to a lot of good resources just by doing a simple search. One thing is certain, there is no shortage of information.

* Work with what you have, or what you can easily get - To get started quickly, my advice is to do something right away and keep doing something every day. Soon you will be better able to judge what areas are most interesting to you and best fit your needs, as well as where to get the information you need to keep progressing.

* Buy used books - Many of the book sellers on the internet now offer used books through a network of thousands of book re-sellers and private individuals. You can save a lot of money this way.

* Once you get started, write simple programs that help you automate something that is wasting your time. For example, if at the end of every day you make a backup of the files you worked on during the day by copying the files "by hand" to a cd, you could write a program that automatically searches your working folders and copies the files for you - without you having to do anything. The extra time you get from each little helper program you write is time you can use to learn more about programming.

* Find a computer programmers "user group" somewhere near you. Almost all larger cities have such groups that meet on a regular basis - usually monthly. Many of these meetings are free, and usually they provide presentations on "how-to" do various programming tasks. They often also have study groups and beginners sessions. Not all languages are represented in all cites - but anything is better than nothing, so it can be worthwhile to attend any meeting of this sort that you can find that is within a reasonable distance.

* Take a beginners course at a local community college or extended studies program. These classes are usually offered at a very reasonable cost, and will help you get started. I have found a number of these classes available on line - and if you are eligible for entry, it can be very convenient to take a course this way.

It?s time to get started

Programming can be fun, challenging, useful, and profitable. Not everyone has the nature or interest to become a full-time programmer, but almost anyone who can use a computer can learn to do something useful or fun with computer programming. If you think it is something you might enjoy, then I encourage you to give it a try and see what it's all about. It is going to take time and dedication to become proficient, but it all starts with a single step. So now is the time.

Refurbished Laptop Computers For Students

The first question to answer if you are student looking to purchase a laptop or a parent thinking about buying a laptop for your child is the budget. If there is no budget or you can spend $800 or $900+ consider buying a new laptop.

Once the budget is in hand then consider the intended use for the laptop.

For colleges and universities, visit the school's Web site for useful information. They will often provide a recommended minimum required laptop specification. However, don't be fooled they often will suggest much more than is needed. One final thought: students need a notebook that is small and light enough to lug back and forth across campus but rugged enough to withstand bouncing around in a backpack.

If it is to browse the web, instant messaging and type papers then a minimal laptop will work fine. Browsing the web only requires 128MB RAM. You can't type faster than a very old Pentium 90 laptop, so word processing runs fine on older laptops. If you have any specialized applications it is always a good idea to go to the software vendors website and check out the Minimum Systems Requirements to make sure the application will work. If you are a serious gamer all bets are off as you might need 2GB RAM, a fast CPU and even a specialized graphics chip and have to spend $2000.

Most college campuses these days have wireless networks. Older laptops can accept Wi-Fi cards, which cost $30, so they are easily to upgrade.

Older laptops often do not have working batteries and even on new ones after a year or two the battery may not work. It usually does not matter, as schools know students want to use their laptops everywhere and often provide many extra wall outlets, so they can be plugged in. New batteries often don't last more than 2-3 hours.
